I have a combination skin type which during the fall and winter tends to get very dry. Very, very dry. It becomes rough and uncomfortably tight, starts to flake around my nose and hairline and gets extra sensitive.
During these months, I can’t use most products I am normally using. My skin so easily gets red, itchy and inflamed – it reacts even to pretty mild products. So, in the time when it needs a lot of help, most products just aren’t helping.
Luckily, my DIY products seem to not upset it practically at all. Which is great because I do have some pretty amazing recipes for DIY facial masks for dry skin.
I love these masks so much! They provide such a gentle, natural care while giving my skin some break from the chemicals. Plus, they help soothe my skin quite nicely, and then I can start using again some of the store-bought products I love (cause let’s face it – DIY products offer only a temporary solution and in my experience you need to mix them with regular skincare to get the best results).
Anyhow, I start using these masks as soon as it starts getting cold. I have my favorite, but I usually rotate them all or just follow my current mood.

1. Avocado face mask for dry skin
Avocado is one of the best fruits for dry, aging or sensitive skin. It is full of natural fats that replenish the skin, protect it against harsh conditions and soothe irritations.
- 1 tablespoon avocado puree
- 1 – 2 teaspoons honey
- a few drops of any skin-friendly oil
Mash well a piece of avocado with a fork. When you get a smooth puree, add the honey and just enough oil to get a nice, creamy consistency.
Wash and gently exfoliate your face. Apply a thick layer of the mask. Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes. Wash the mask off and apply your face cream while your skin is still slightly damp.
2. Restoring yogurt and cocoa face mask
This is one of the best combinations you can use when your skin gets dull and dry. Yogurt gently exfoliates your face, honey replenishes and rejuvenates it, and cocoa softens and nourishes the skin and provides lots of antioxidants.
- 2 teaspoons thick yogurt
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
Mix well the yogurt and honey. When they are well combined, add just enough cocoa powder to get a smooth paste you can easily apply to your face.
Apply the mask to a clean face. Leave it on for around 15 minutes. Then wash it off with lukewarm water and a gentle face wash. Apply your face cream right away.
3. Rice, milk and honey mask for dry, dull skin
This is probably the mask I use most often, and not only during the winter months. I love how soft, clear and bright my skin looks after it. Plus, this mask is incredibly repairing and rejuvenating.
- 3 teaspoons of boiled rice
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 1 tablespoon of milk
Boil the rice until soft. Mash it well with a fork, try to get rid of all the lumps. When smooth as much as possible, add the honey and milk and mix everything well together.
You should get a thin, runny mask. Apply a thin layer to your face and reapply every time your skin soaks it up. Do this for around 20 minutes, then wash it off. Apply your favorite moisturizer.
4. Gentle exfoliating banana face mask
This is one of the recipes I only recently started using, but it quickly became one of my favorites. Because nothing brightens up the skin like gentle exfoliation. And this mask/scrub is not only very gentle, but also incredibly nourishing and healing.
- 1 teaspoon mashed banana
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- a few drops jojoba oil
First, mash well a small piece of banana. Add the jojoba oil and mix well. Then add just enough brown sugar to get a scrub of your preferred thickness and consistency.
Apply the scrub to a clean, wet face. Using upward circular motions, gently exfoliate your skin for around 5 minutes. Then apply another layer of the mixture over the first one and leave it on as a mask for another 10 – 15 minutes.
5. Diy facial mask for dry skin with carrot and coconut oil
Dry skin needs lots of moisture, nutrients and antioxidants, and this mask provides all of that. Carrots are also anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, protective and they promote the skin renewal process.
- 2 tablespoons carrot puree
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon milk
Mash boiled carrot with a fork until you get a smooth puree. While hot, add the coconut oil and milk and mix until everything is smooth and well combined. Let it cool down a bit so that it doesn’t burn your skin.
Wash your face. Apply the mask in as thick a layer as possible. Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes, then wash it off. Apply your face cream while your skin is still warm and slightly damp, to lock in the moisture.
